DC Housing Authority Wins $20 Million in Funding for Eastgate Gardens
(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams announced today that the District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) was awarded a $20 million HOPE VI Grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the revitalization of the Eastgate Gardens community, a 230-unit public housing development in the Marshall Heights neighborhood. The effort, which is estimated to produce more than $73 million in total investment, has spawned plans for a new school and a partnership with music and fashion mogul Russell Simmons, founder of Def Jam Records.
"This is an exciting day for the Marshall Heights community, the Ward 7 community, and for every District resident," said Mayor Williams. "Marshall Heights is on the verge of a renaissance and with the approval of the Eastgate HOPE VI plan, the neighborhood has the resources it needs to realize its potential."
The plan to rebuild the former Eastgate Gardens will improve more than just the 20 plus acre parcel that will house the new community. It is anticipated that the Eastgate revitalization will bring new opportunities to an area that will stretch to more than 250 acres. The new Eastgate Gardens will become a 269-unit mixed-income community with 61 rental units and 108 home ownership units serving low and moderate income families. A 100-unit senior facility will also be built near the original site.
During the next few months, DCHA officials will be meeting with HUD representatives to finalize the details of the revitalization plan. The site is already cleared with the goal of breaking ground by the end of 2004.
