Mayor Williams' Housing Initiative has three primary goals:
- Protect existing affordable housing and prevent displacement
- Convert vacant and dilapidated buildings into new housing
- Promote new housing for people of all incomes
The District of Columbia continues to experience one of the strongest real estate markets in decades, and the Williams Administration is working hard to establish a business environment where housing can get financed and built. At the same time, it is using the city's resources to preserve affordable housing.
In 2001, the Williams Administration helped finance the development of 3,400 homes, asked developers to propose housing projects on 11 District-owned properties, proposed comprehensive legislation to reform the way housing is developed, and launched a new initiative to promote the development of vacant and abandoned buildings.
