Affordable Housing Pipeline

The District's current housing market is unprecedented. Since 1999, the Williams Administration helped finance nearly 11,000 units of affordable housing:

  • In FY 1999 1,560 units were financed
  • In FY 2000 1,902 units were financed
  • In FY 2001 3,353 units were financed
  • In FY 2002, 2,510 units were financed
  • To date in FY 2003, nearly 1,600 units in the pipeline.
In total—between the city's project and the private ones—there are more than 30,000 units of housing that are either complete, in production or in the citywide pipeline. In addition to new housing, the District's Housing Authority (DCHA) operates more than 9,000 units of public housing and administers 8,000 Section 8 certificates and vouchers. More units will be financed in fourth quarter of 2003 as the District closes financing on some of the additional 5,400 housing units currently in its pipeline. The private sector is also building approximately 8,000 units of unsubsidized housing throughout the city. The following links provide more information about the Williams Administrations' efforts to preserve affordable housing and produce more housing for people of all incomes.
